Ch.18 Module 2 Questions

4.    In what different ways was colonial rule established in various parts of Africa and Asia?

Some ways the book said that colonial status occurred in various ways, in India conquest grew out of the early interaction with European trading firms. For most of Africa, mainland Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands came later out of competition for resources and markets. The European understanding of gaining colonial rule meant "whatever happens we have got the Maxim gun and they have not."That is saying they have a better weapon then them which is an automatic gun. Meanwhile, Europeans had to fight a lot in wars of conquest attest. For the peoples of India and Indonesia as stated in Strayer page 793 it was saying colonial conquest grew out of earlier interaction with European trading firms. The British East India Company played the leading role in the colonial takeover of South Asia. But, for Africa it was more of a scramble  and pitted half a dozen European powers against one another as they partitioned the entire country. The process brought upon many negotiations with one to another but the good thing about it, it was peaceful. During this time there were a lot of great military forces and made European victory come and Africa was then conquested. There have been a lot of fights during this time.

1.  In what ways did the Industrial Revolution shape the character of 19th century European imperialism?

Success and productivity of the European Industrial revolution led to the need for raw materials, markets and generated great wealth throughout the world. This changed the patterns of economic and social life. Raw material and markets caused Europeans to reach out throughout the rest of the world to meet their needs. European Nationalism was the single greatest factor that led to imperialism. Europe needed to sell its own products as Strayer mentions on page 788 of the book he then says that one of peculiarities of industrial capitalism was that it periodically produced more manufactured goods than its own people could afford to buy. But, part of European and Americans deals with China in the market was all represented by its huge population. Imperialism promised to solve the big conflicts of an industrializing society while avoiding revolution or the redistribution of wealth. Mass nationalism was the cause for imperialism to be so big in Europe in the nineteenth century. Other colonies as well then became “Great Power” status because of all what they were getting from this that was going on at this time. Overseas expansion later became more ideal for people in these countries wanting to achieve their goals and make more profit.

9. How did the policies of colonial states change the economic lives of their subjects?

Forced labor had the greatest impact on cultures in the colonized areas of the world. Some of the forced labor was based upon an amount of service to the state, others included an additional percentage of land that was cultivated. But, mostly colonization was an exploitation of resources and that included people. This was caused during the colonial era from the demands of the colonial state. People during this time were being unpaid on public projects like building railroads or constructing government buildings and transporting goods. Strayer was talking about this on page 802. The text was also stating all natives were obligated for statue labor to ten to twelve days of the year. The rules back then were so different than how it is now. But, of course there had to be a reaction with all of this that was going on. The public in Europe was creating a scandal which resulted in the Belgian government to take control of the Congo in 1908 and ended Leopold’s reign. But, during this hectic time as well there was a virus going on and created panic as mentioned in the text. The forced labor meanwhile took shape in a cultivation system of the Netherlands East which is Indonesia. Peasants during this time were required to cultivate 20 percent or more of their land in cash crops like sugar or coffee to meet their tax obligation to the state. These times were very tough.
